"The awareness of all this comes along with a stiff heart, because Havana is also a concept of happiness and future and, as each day goes by, much of the former urbanity in Havana dies and only the memory of what could have been and of what could still be the city of many hopes and many realities, remains in the faces of men and women.

At the Malecon end the countless streets that reveal the working or the political city, the Havana from touristic advertisements, cut in slices of permanent stratification, the regime squares and those of the people, the markets and the recoveries, entwined in their function of Cuba postcard.

But the Malecon remains unbeatable in its role of levelling of the people, dirty or different, running in the monotony of degraded houses, sheltering families or dumps, where some nymph evokes, protected by Fidel's name, an oscillating, but not absurd, Victory of Samothrace."
